Lightweight Cement-Based Materials and Structures

Description

With the advancement of cement and concrete technologies, lighter weight materials with adequate strength can be produced. Lightweight cement and concrete materials have a wide range of benefits, such as reduced self-weight of structures, savings in transportation, handling, and installation costs for precast units, allowing greater flexibility in the design of the structure, and improved sound and thermal insulation.

Lightweight cement and concrete materials can be achieved by different methods, such as utilizing lightweight aggregate, eliminating fines fraction (pervious concrete), or introducing air voids (foamed concrete). These methods have seen further developments, such as the utilization of waste materials and by-products as lightweight aggregate, the production of artificial lightweight aggregate, and the formulation of ultra-lightweight foamed concretes. Concrete-based lightweight structures are not restricted to only the use of the afore-mentioned lightweight concretes; advanced materials such as ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) and textile reinforced concrete (TRC) also allow concrete and reinforced concrete members to be designed thinner and hence lighter.

The aim of this Special Issue is to publish original research and review articles on developments in lightweight cement and concrete materials as well as concrete-based lightweight structures. We welcome both original research and review articles.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Lightweight aggregate mortar/concrete
  • Foamed concrete
  • Pervious concrete
  • Artificial lightweight aggregate
  • Recycled materials for lightweight mortar/concrete
  • Design of lightweight mortar/concrete
  • Performance enhancement of lightweight mortar/concrete
  • Mechanical and durability properties of lightweight mortar/concrete
  • Insulation properties of lightweight mortar/concrete
  • Microstructures of lightweight mortar/concrete
  • Structural performance of lightweight concrete
  • Lightweight precast/prefabricated concrete units
  • Prediction models for lightweight mortar/concrete
