The pulse generator adopts Blumlein transmission line principle. As shown in Figure 1(a), when the closing switch is not closed, the voltage of the DC supply charges the two transmission lines. After the charging is completed, the switch is closed, and the energy is released to the load. When the impedance matches, the duration of the pulses loaded on the load is twice the propagation time of the electromagnetic wave in a single transmission line, and the amplitude of the pulse is the value of the charging voltage. In order to achieve adjustable pulse duration, a pulse formation network (Figure 1(b)) is adopted to simulate the two transmission lines, whose pulse duration is , where is the series of equivalent inductance () and equivalent capacitance ().
