We have proposed a tactile geometry display technique based on active finger movement. The technique uses a perceptual feature that, during finger movement, the length of a touched object is perceived to increase when the object is moved in the same direction as the finger movement or to decrease when it is moved in the opposite direction. With this display technique, a wide range of tactile shapes can be presented with realistic rigid edges and continuous surfaces. In this work, to further develop our technique, we performed psychophysical experiments to study perceptions of length and roughness under this presentation technique. The results indicated that the elongation (shrinkage) of the object can be observed regardless of the roughness of the touched object and that the perceived roughness of the object slightly changes but the changes are much smaller than those theoretically expected.

Length and Roughness Perception in a Moving-Plateau Touch Display

Force feedback has proven to be beneficial in the domain of robot-assisted rehabilitation. According to the patients&#39; personal needs, the generated forces may either be used to assist, support, or oppose their movements. In our current research project, we focus onto the upper limb training for MS (multiple sclerosis) and CVA (cerebrovascular accident) patients, in which a basic building block to implement many rehabilitation exercises was found. This building block is a haptic linear path: a second-order continuous path, defined by a list of points in space. Earlier, different attempts have been investigated to realize haptic linear paths. In order to have a good training quality, it is important that the haptic simulation is continuous up to the second derivative while the patient is enforced to follow the path tightly, even when low or no guiding forces are provided. In this paper, we describe our best solution to these haptic linear paths, discuss the weaknesses found in practice, and propose and validate an improvement.

Improved Haptic Linear Lines for Better Movement Accuracy in Upper Limb Rehabilitation

Manual segmentation of structures for diagnosis and treatment
of various diseases is a very time-consuming procedure. Therefore,
some level of automation during the segmentation is desired, as it often
significantly reduces the segmentation time. A typical solution is to allow
manual interaction to steer the segmentation process, which is known as
semiautomatic segmentation. In 2D, such interaction is usually achieved
with click-and-drag operations, but in 3D a more sophisticated interface
is called for. In this paper, we propose a semi-automatic Active Contour
Modelling for the delineation of medical structures in 3D, tomographic
images. Interaction is implemented with the employment of a 3D haptic
device, which is used to steer the contour deformation towards the correct
boundaries. In this way, valuable haptic feedback is provided about
the 3D surface and its deformation. Experiments on simulated and real
tracheal CT data showed that the proposed technique is an intuitive and
effective segmentation mechanism.

Force Feedback to Assist Active Contour
Modelling for Tracheal Stenosis Segmentation

Today, several vehicles are equipped with a visual display combined with a haptic rotary device for handling in-vehicle information system tasks while driving. This experimental study investigates whether a haptic addition to a visual interface interferes with or supports secondary task performance and whether haptic information could be used without taking eyes off road. Four interfaces were compared during simulated driving: visual only, partly corresponding visual-haptic, fully corresponding visual-haptic, and haptic only. Secondary task performance and subjective mental workload were measured. Additionally, the participants were interviewed. It was found that some haptic support improved performance. However, when more haptic information was used, the results diverged in terms of task completion time and interface comprehension. Some participants did not sense all haptics provided, some did not comprehend the correspondence between the haptic and visual interfaces, and some did. Interestingly, the participants managed to complete the tasks when using haptic-only information.

Haptic Addition to a Visual Menu Selection Interface Controlled by an In-Vehicle Rotary Device

The increasing amount of NFC phones is attracting application developers to utilize NFC functionality. We can hence soon expect a large amount of mobile applications that users command by touching NFC tags in their environment with their NFC phones. The communication technology and the data formats have been standardized by the NFC Forum, but there are no conventions for advertising to the users NFC tags and the functionality touching the tags triggers. Only individual graphical symbols have been suggested when guidelines for advertising a rich variety of functionality are called for. In this paper, we identify the main challenges and present our proposal, a set of design guidelines based on more than twenty application prototypes we have built. We hope to initiate discussion and research resulting in uniform user interfaces for NFC-based services.

Designing Tangible User Interfaces for NFC Phones

We present an intention estimator algorithm that can deal with dynamic change of the environment in a man-machine system and will be able to be utilized for an autarkical human-assisting system. The operational intention modes are identified by stochastic computation using a Bayesian particle filter with the trained <svg style="vertical-align:-0.20473pt;width:35.775002px;" id="M2" height="11.6875" version="1.1" viewBox="0 0 35.775002 11.6875" width="35.775002" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g transform="matrix(.017,0,0,-.017,.062,11.363)"><use xlink:href="#x53" /></g><g transform="matrix(.017,0,0,-.017,8.12,11.363)"><use xlink:href="#x4F" /></g><g transform="matrix(.017,0,0,-.017,20.563,11.363)"><use xlink:href="#x4D" /></g></svg>. This method enables to omit the troublesome process to specify types of information which should be used to build the estimator. Applying the proposed method to the remote operation task, the estimator's behavior was analyzed, the pros and cons of the method were investigated, and ways for the improvement were discussed. As a result, it was confirmed that the estimator can identify the intention modes at 44–94 percent concordance ratios against normal intention modes whose periods can be found by about 70 percent of members of human analysts. On the other hand, it was found that human analysts' discrimination which was used as canonical data for validation differed depending on difference of intention modes. Specifically, an investigation of intentions pattern discriminated by eight analysts showed that the estimator could not identify the same modes that human analysts could not discriminate. And, in the analysis of the multiple different intentions, it was found that the estimator could identify the same type of intention modes to human-discriminated ones as well as 62–73 percent when the first and second dominant intention modes were considered.

Estimation Algorithm of Machine Operational Intention by Bayes Filtering with Self-Organizing Map

This paper presents the design, development, and testing of a tabletop interface called RoboTable, which is an infrastructure supporting intuitive interaction with both mobile robots and virtual components in a mixed-reality environment. With a flexible software toolkit and specifically developed robots, the platform enables various modes of interaction with mobile robots. Using this platform, prototype applications are developed for two different application domains: <i>RoboPong</i> investigates the efficiency of the RoboTable system in game applications, and <i>ExploreRobot</i> explores the possibility of using robots and intuitive interaction to enhance learning.
