Marking scheme for larval sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus using visible implant elastomer (VIE) tags. VIE tag colors appear differently under visible light (a) and when fluoresced at 405 nanometers (nm) (b). Using five fluorescent colors and four body locations (c), it is possible to individually mark 150 larvae. For example, injecting yellow VIE beneath translucent skin at two locations on the right side of a larva provides the unique code Y2Y4 (d).
