Novel Method for Automated Analysis of Retinal Images: Results in Subjects with Hypertensive Retinopathy and CADASIL

Figure 3

Examples of retinal image analysis of a subject with hypertensive retinopathy and matched healthy control. Arteriole-to-venule ratio (AVR), tortuosity index (TI), and mean fractal dimension (mean-D) carried out by Cioran and BRetina are reported. Tortuosity index (TI) values obtained using Cioran are compared to the values obtained using two different approaches to show that TI as measured using our approach is more sensitive to detect abnormal twisting of the retinal vessels. TI as measured by Cioran showed 40% relative increase in the subject with hypertensive retinopathy compared to the control, while TI as measured using the integral of the vessel curvature [18] or the ratio between arc and cord length of the vessel segment [19] showed 14% and 6% relative increase, respectively.
