Exercise-Induced Neuroprotection in the Spastic Han Wistar Rat: The Possible Role of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor

Mean Purkinje cell counts in the cerebellums of exercised mutant (Mut) and normal (Nrml) spastic Han Wistar rats ( pairs) after 28-day treatment with K252a (TrkB antagonist) or DMSO (vehicle). Two-factor ANOVA showed a significant synergistic effect of genotype and treatment. Asterisk indicates that mutant animals treated with K252a had significantly fewer Purkinje cells surviving than DMSO-treated mutants. There were statistically similar numbers of Purkinje cells in normal rats regardless of the treatment. Values are mean SEM.
