Glia-Neuron Interactions in the Retina Can Be Studied in Cocultures of Müller Cells and Retinal Ganglion Cells

Glutamate uptake in starved Müller cells. Müller cells were cultured 24 hours in energy sufficient conditions or starved within the same time frame. Kinetic L-glutamate uptake at extracellular glutamate concentrations from 1 to 500 μM was measured during the described conditions. Starvation significantly increased glutamate uptake ((a); and . at 500 μM glutamate). The relative maximal uptake rate, , was also significantly increased ((b); ). Values are represented as mean values ± SEM of 5 experiments. Differences were tested using unpaired two-tailed -test at the different glutamate concentrations.
