Paramagnetic Manganese in the Atherosclerotic Plaque of Carotid Arteries

Comparison of the ESE detected EPR spectra of 20 nm Mn-HAp (A, green curve); Mn-SOD (B, red curve); stable AP, sample number 23, (C, black curve); unstable AP number 27 (D, blue curve). The spectra are detected at  K. The dotted and dashed lines indicate the hyperfine components of two presumably differently located manganese ions in the crystal structure of HAp in the stable and unstable APs. The arrow shows the value of the magnetic field in which the curves (ESE decays) were measured. Solid line indicates the presence of additional paramagnetic species (mainly, carbon-centered “free” radicals, FR [6]).
