Different Cellular Response of Human Mesothelial Cell MeT-5A to Short-Term and Long-Term Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes Exposure

Figure 2

MWCNT induced morphological changes and increased growth of MeT-5A cells. Subconfluent cultures (1.5 × 105 cells) of MeT-5A cells in 6-well plates were continuously exposed to 10 μg/cm2 of MWCNT for 3 months. (a) Phase contrast micrographs of subconfluent monolayers of passage-matched control MeT-5A cells and MWCNT-treated cells at 12 weeks (M-MeT-5A). Scale bar = 500 μm (upper images); scale bar = 200 μm (lower images). (b) MeT-5A and MWCNT-treated cells (1 month and 3 months) were plated in 6-well plates at a density of 1.5 × 105 cells in growth medium. After 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h, cells were digested and the cell number was counted by hemocytometer. Data are means ± SD (). versus passage-matched control cells.
