(a) The bone marrow core biopsy section shows a slightly hypocellular marrow with intact granulocytic and megakaryocytic cells but the absence of erythroid colonies (hematoxylin and eosin, scale bar: 200 μm). (b) Immunoperoxidase staining for hemoglobin A highlights only scattered positive cells (dark brown) with no colony formation (scale bar: 200 μm). Most of the brownish appearing cells represent iron-laden macrophages.
