Beneficial Effect of Shikonin on Experimental Colitis Induced by Dextran Sulfate Sodium in Balb/C Mice

Effect of shikonin on nitric oxide and overall cytokine production in peritoneal macrophages isolated from Balb/C mice. Mouse peritoneal macrophages were isolated and cultured for 24 h. Supernatants were collected, and nitrites and cytokines were measured in duplicate. The B (blank) group represents untreated and unstimulated macrophages, C (control) group represents those macrophages stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (1 μg mL−1), and finally two other groups were treated for 1 h with different doses of shikonin (0.5 and 1 μM) prior to stimulation with lipopolysaccharide. Results are representative of ten independent experiments. Differences were determined by means of a one-way analysis of variance followed by Dunnett’s t-test (, , significantly different from the control group; , significantly different from the blank group).
