Polarized light microscopic images of a novel threadlike structure obtained from the large intestine of a pig. The NTS appeared to be bright (a), while it becomes dark when the polarized angle is rotated 45° (b). This distinct polarization property means that the NTS contains a significant amount of collagen fibers which are oriented in a single direction. Scale bar is 100 μm.
