The hypothetical mechanism by which AMPA receptors and Ca2+ permeability are involved in motor neuron death in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, resulting in increase of Ca2+ channel permeability of glutamate receptor at the cell membrane, elevating the intracellular Ca2+ concentration and then causing some pathological changes (such as TDP fragments aggregation, mitochondrial damage etc.), leading to neuronal death (right side).
