The hypothetical mechanism by which AMPA receptors and Ca²⁺ permeability are involved in motor neuron death in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, resulting in increase of Ca²⁺ channel permeability of glutamate receptor at the cell membrane, elevating the intracellular Ca²⁺ concentration and then causing some pathological changes (such as TDP fragments aggregation, mitochondrial damage etc.), leading to neuronal death (right side).
