Steviol Glycosides Modulate Glucose Transport in Different Cell Types

Effects of Stevia extracts on glucose transport activity compared to the effect of 0.1 mM of methylglyoxal. SH-SY5Y (a) and HL-60 (b) cells were treated with steviol glycosides, with insulin (I), with methylglyoxal (MG, 2 hours), and with steviol glycosides or insulin in the presence of MG. Glucose uptake was assayed as described in Section 2. Results are expressed as means ± SD of three independent experiments, each performed in triplicate. Statistical analysis was performed by Bonferroni multiple comparison test following one-way ANOVA. *, significantly different from control cells; °, significantly different from cells treated with MG alone.
