Melatonin Prevents Osteoarthritis-Induced Cartilage Degradation via Targeting MicroRNA-140

<div>The effect of melatonin on cell proliferation and matrix synthesis in human articular chondrocytes. (a) Chondrocytes were treated with melatonin (MT) at concentrations of 1 <i>μ</i>M and 100 <i>μ</i>M, and cell proliferation was evaluated using the CCK-8 assay. Untreated cells served as the control group (CTRL) and cells treated with ethanol (EtOH) served as the vehicle group. (b–d) The mRNA levels of chondrogenic genes, including <i>COL2A1</i> (b), <i>ACAN</i> (c), and <i>SOX9</i> (d), were quantified with real-time PCR using <i>GAPDH</i> for normalization.
