Experimental setup in the field at the Ecological Botanical Gardens of the University of Bayreuth (Germany). In each block, competition treatments per surrounding species were placed next to each other, with two adjacent plots sharing three surrounding plants. The order of treatments and the order of central species were randomly chosen.
