Three phases of interaction kinetics. The response unit may be related to a change in resonance angle, intensity, or refractive index, depending on what you are measuring. When the binding reaction begins, the signal change in the association region is observed (as receptor-ligand complexes form) up to the point where the binding surface is fully covered, at which point we observe a constant signal of the steady state; when we begin flushing out the ligand, we observe a sharp decline in the dissociation region, which is a result of rapid unbinding of the receptor-ligand complexes.
