In 2020, we integrated Writefull into our submission workflow. Simply put, Writefull is an AI-based language tool that suggests improvements to grammar, spelling, and academic language. The integration of this tool has proved to be invaluable for authors across the world as it ensures that important research does not get overlooked on the basis of language.
Breaking barriers to research communication and facilitating the dissemination of knowledge in the most seamless way possible is at the very core of our mission as an open access publisher. To this effect, we have expanded our partnership with Writefull to include structural checks.
How does it work?
As Chief Applied Linguist at Writefull Hilde van Zeeland explains, the Structural Checks service uses Writefull’s Metadata API to check if a manuscript is complete. It checks whether author affiliations are present, references are cited in the text, and key sections are included. This helps ensure that all required information is present and complete, and can iron out easily fixed issues earlier in the process.
When you submit your next paper, you will be invited to use Writefull’s structural checks together with its language check. Accept and you will continue to Writefull, where you can upload your manuscript and see the results of both checks, as well as download a tracked changes document and a report on the structural requirements to meet before you submit.
What are the benefits for authors?
Saves you time finalizing your submission and improves your chances of getting your manuscript through to the next stage. The Writefull Structural Check service can help you ensure you’ve not missed a citation or affiliation somewhere and that all necessary information is included. Knowing that all basic information is prechecked and complete before you submit means your paper is unlikely to be rejected for a simple omission.
Saves time in screening and review. With structural checks taken care of, the editors and reviewers handling your paper will be free to focus fully on the research content of your paper and your paper will be sent out for review sooner.
Provided to all authors free of charge. As with the Writefull Language Check service, this service is offered automatically for all our authors with no additional charges.
It’s your choice whether to use the service or not. If for any reason you’d rather not use this service, you can submit without it – but we can’t think of a good reason not to use it.
