Erythropoietin Exacerbates Inflammation and Increases the Mortality of Histoplasma capsulatum-Infected Mice

EPO pretreatment did not alter fungal burden in the lungs and spleen of Hc-infected mice. Hc and EPO + Hc animals were infected i.t. with sublethal (5 × 105 yeasts/100 μL/mouse) inoculum and fungal burden determined in lungs and spleen 14 days later. Fungal burden was expressed as log10 of the number of colony-forming units per gram of tissue (CFU/g). Mean ± SEM values are from one representative of two independent experiments (–6). Non differences were determined using Newman-Keuls multiple comparison test.
