Cells were acutely isolated from hearts after 1 week of running exercise (ad libitum) or from hearts of aged-matched, nonrunning littermate controls. Our expression profiling analysis of epicardial cells identified 4,112 transcripts that were differentially expressed between cells of runners vs. nonrunners. Of these, 2,300 total transcripts were increased in runners and 1,812 total transcripts were decreased in runners ().
